Plan the Complete Recovery System
The largest number printed on one component does not determine whether the recovery is suitable. Check how every part will be connected and loaded before leaving home.
- Identify the intended recovery method Dynamic recovery and winching use different equipment, loading and procedures. Use only a method you understand and are trained to perform.
- Confirm approved vehicle recovery points Use purpose-designed points approved for the vehicle and intended recovery. Do not assume a tow ball or transport tie-down point is suitable.
- Match every rating in the system Check the rope, shackles, hitch, recovery points, winch, anchor and other hardware against the manufacturer-approved configuration.
- Inspect before and after use Look for cuts, abrasion, glazing, deformation, corrosion, damaged stitching, unreadable labels and other retirement indicators.

No single list suits every vehicle or trip.
What is a kinetic recovery rope?
A kinetic recovery rope is designed to stretch under load and transfer stored energy during an appropriate dynamic recovery. It is not an ordinary tow rope. Correct vehicle suitability, rated connection points, compatible hardware, technique and an exclusion zone are essential.
How do I choose the correct recovery-gear rating?
Do not select equipment from vehicle mass or a single advertised number alone. Follow the vehicle and equipment manufacturers' guidance and match every component to the approved recovery method. The complete system is constrained by its least-capable component or connection.
Can I use a tow ball as a recovery point?
Do not assume a tow ball, tie-down point or unverified attachment is suitable for vehicle recovery. Use a purpose-designed recovery point or receiver attachment approved and rated for the vehicle, towbar, loading direction and intended recovery method.
What is a soft shackle used for?
A soft shackle is rated connection hardware used between compatible recovery components. Its suitability depends on the rating, attachment shape, bend radius and surface condition. Keep it away from sharp edges, heat and abrasion, and inspect it before every use.
Will a Rugged recovery hitch fit my towbar?
The current Rugged recovery-hitch listing is designed for common 50mm x 50mm receivers, but dimensions alone do not confirm recovery suitability. Verify the hitch, receiver, towbar and vehicle ratings and use the approved loading orientation.
What does a winch pulley ring do?
A winch pulley ring forms part of a compatible synthetic-rope rigging system. Depending on the trained configuration, it may redirect the rope or support a multi-line pull. Rigging geometry changes component and anchor loads, so follow the winch, ring and rope instructions.
Is a tyre inflator/deflator also an air compressor?
Not necessarily. Rugged's current twin inflator/deflator listing uses standard air connections and is intended to connect to a suitable air source. Confirm what is included and whether you need a separate compatible compressor.
What tyre pressure should I use off-road?
There is no universal off-road pressure. Suitable pressure depends on the vehicle, tyre construction, load, speed, terrain and manufacturer guidance. Monitor pressures and temperatures, avoid excessive speed at reduced pressure and reinflate to the appropriate road pressure before sealed-road travel.
When should recovery equipment be replaced?
Inspect equipment before and after every use and follow the manufacturer's retirement criteria. Cuts, abrasion, glazing, heat damage, deformation, corrosion, damaged stitching, unreadable ratings or an unknown load history are reasons to stop and assess or replace the item.
